MSC PNG Provincial Chapter Elects New Provincial

The 12th Provincial Chapter of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of

Jesus in Papua New Guinea was held at Chevalier Centre, Vunapope, Kokopo, East New Britain Province, from May 1st - 11th 2011.

Apart from many issues discussed was the Election of the new Provincial Superior.

Rev. Fr. George Tami MSC was elected Provincial.

George hails from Matupit near Rabaul in East New Britain Province. He entered Vunapau, the Sacred Heart Novitiate in 1978 and made his first profession the following year. Towards the end of his theological studies at De Boismenu College, Bomana, outside Port Moresby, he took his final vows. That was in 1985. That same year he was ordained a deacon. Then about six months later he was ordained to the Holy Order of Priesthood.

Until his election to the Provincial Superior’s post in the brotherhood of the society in PNG, he has been a master’s student in Comparative Studies in a state university in the neighbouring Indonesia.

The Island of Matupit lies less than a kilometre from the famous active volcano, Valcan, separated only by a lagoon. Another very significant thing about the birth place of Fr. George, also known as Pak Tomo (or Mr. Tomo, for Tami) in Indonesia where he is now finishing his studies, is that it happens to be landing place of the first Catholic Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Papua New Guinea on 28th September 1882.

On the feast of St. Michael, the Archangel, Fr. Navarre, Fr. Gramaile and Br. Fromm having landed here a day earlier travelled to Nodup where they celebrated their first Mass on the land.

A stone tablet is erected where the landing occurred. (go back)
